August: dog days, busy minds

National Dog Day is here 🐾🐾

National Dog Day falls on 26th August, and across all four branches we're using it as an excuse to talk about something clients ask us about a lot: what does a day at Wag Club actually look like for your dog, beyond the walks?

The short answer is that a good day is built on variety, not just exercise. Every dog with us gets at least one dedicated enrichment session daily, on top of walks and play, and this month we wanted to pull back the curtain on what that really means.

"August at The Wag Club: fewer heatwave headlines, more snuffle mats."

What enrichment really means

Enrichment isn't a toy cupboard that gets opened occasionally, it's woven into the daily routine at every branch. Depending on the dog, that might look like:

  • Snuffle mats for nose work and natural foraging behaviour

  • Licky mats for calm, focused downtime between play sessions

  • Treat puzzles for problem-solving, always supervised

  • Adventure tunnels and climbing frames for physical play and confidence-building

  • 1:1 time with a staff member, which sounds small but is one of the most valuable things we do all day

Human interaction is enrichment too

Dogs are social animals, and calm, attentive human contact does real work, whether that's quiet grooming and companionship or active play and recall practice. Shy or anxious dogs especially benefit from patient, low-pressure attention that builds confidence gradually rather than all at once.

Every dog gets a different day. Puppies get shorter, more frequent sessions with proper rest built in, because an overtired puppy doesn't benefit from more stimulation, it just needs to sleep. Older or anxious dogs get gentler, lower-key activities, and a dog resting quietly is still getting something out of the day: sometimes the enrichment is simply calm company.

Back from the summer holidays?

If your dog has had a few weeks of extra attention over the summer, a return to the normal daycare routine can take a day or two to settle, a bit more excitement at drop-off, a bit more tiredness at pick-up. Completely normal. Let your branch know if anything's shifted so we can ease things back in gently.

Booking into September

If your days are changing once term time routines kick back in, get in touch with your branch now so we can get you settled into your regular slots before the September rush.
