June: full bloom

Summer has arrived, and so has the fun ๐Ÿพ

June is the month the year really hits its stride. The school run is nearly done, the parks are in full bloom, and the dogs at The Wag Club are absolutely in their element. Long days, warm evenings and the smell of a North London summer. There's nothing quite like it.

Before we look ahead, we want to take a moment to look back, because May was a truly special month at The Wag Club. We held our first ever Chelsea Flower Show themed event across our branches, the team pulled out all the stops, and the dogs looked absolutely magnificent. More on that below.

This month we're also sharing our essential guide to keeping your dog safe and happy as temperatures rise, what's on across our four North London branches, and a reminder that summer is prime time for Wag Walks.

"June at The Wag Club: where the flowers are out, the tails are wagging, and every day feels like the best day."

Looking back: our Chelsea Flower Show day ๐ŸŒท

In bloom: The Wag Club goes full Chelsea

May saw us bring a little bit of the Royal Hospital grounds to North London, as all four of our branches transformed into floral wonderlands for our Chelsea Flower Show themed day. The branches were decorated with flowers, foliage and all the colour you'd expect from the most famous flower show in the world, and the dogs, frankly, loved every second of it.

It was a joy to watch. Dogs weaving through floral displays, staff in their finest florals, and the kind of photos that were made for Instagram. It was one of those days that reminded us why we do what we do: creating genuinely special experiences for the dogs in our care, and bringing a bit of brightness to the everyday.

A huge thank you to every member of the team who made it happen, and to all the clients who got involved and shared their photos. Events like this are what make The Wag Club community so brilliant.

If you missed it, or want to see the photos, head over to our social channels where we shared the highlights from all four branches. And watch this space: if the response is anything to go by, themed days are going to become a regular fixture.

Keeping your dog safe this summer โ˜€๏ธ

June typically brings the hottest days of the year to North London, and as much as we love the sunshine, warm weather comes with real risks for dogs. Our teams are trained and prepared, but here's what every owner should know heading into summer.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Signs of heatstroke: act fast

  • Heavy, rapid panting that doesn't settle when your dog rests in the shade

  • Glazed eyes, excessive drooling or a brighter red tongue than usual

  • Weakness, stumbling or collapse: this is an emergency. Get to a vet immediately.

  • Vomiting or diarrhoea alongside any of the above signs

  • Shift walks to the golden hours. Early morning (before 8am) and evening (after 7pm) walks are far safer in June and July. Midday sun is genuinely dangerous for dogs, particularly on paved surfaces.

  • The pavement test. Press the back of your hand to the ground for five seconds. If it's uncomfortable for you, it will burn your dog's paws. Grass, parks and shaded paths are always better options in the heat.

  • Water, water, water. Fresh water at home at all times, and take a bottle on every walk. Dogs regulate temperature through panting and need to stay hydrated to do so effectively.

  • Never leave a dog in a car. A car parked in direct sun can reach over 40ยฐC within an hour, even on a mild day. There are no acceptable circumstances for leaving a dog unattended in a vehicle in summer.

  • Shade is not optional. Make sure your garden or outdoor space offers proper shade during the hottest parts of the day, not just a patch of shadow, but genuine cover.

  • Consider a paddling pool. A shallow garden paddling pool can make a dramatic difference to a dog's comfort on hot days. Many dogs take to them immediately; some need a little encouragement, and all of them look hilarious getting in.

  • Watch for sunburn. Pink-skinned and light-coated dogs, particularly on their ears, nose and belly, can genuinely burn. Dog-safe sunscreen is available and worth using on exposed areas.

  • Speak to your groomer before clipping. It's a common instinct to clip a dog's coat in summer, but for double-coated breeds, the coat actually provides insulation against heat. Get advice specific to your dog's breed before making that call.

At The Wag Club, we monitor weather conditions daily across all branches and adapt our outdoor sessions accordingly. On the very hottest days, we increase shade time, bring out paddling pools and prioritise indoor enrichment activities to keep the dogs comfortable. Your dog's safety always comes first.

Summer routines: keeping the pack happy

Summer can throw a dog's routine off in ways that owners don't always anticipate. School holidays mean children at home, family trips, garden parties, and the general beautiful disruption of the season. For many dogs, that change in routine , however lovely, can cause low-level anxiety or restlessness.

Keeping your dog's daycare days consistent through the summer is one of the best things you can do for their wellbeing. The familiar pack, the familiar faces, the familiar routine: it gives them a constant even when everything else is pleasantly unpredictable.

If you're planning holidays and need to reduce days temporarily, just let your branch know as early as possible. And if you're looking to add extra daysduring the summer, perhaps because you're working from home less and need more cover, speak to your branch team about availability sooner rather than later. Summer places go quickly.

From Jamie

The Chelsea Flower Show day in May was one of my favourite things. Seeing all four branches transformed, watching the dogs trot around completely unbothered by the flowers surrounding them, and seeing the team genuinely have fun with it. That's what The Wag Club is about. It's never just daycare. It's a community, and moments like that remind me how lucky we are to have built it.

June is going to be a brilliant month. The sun is out, the dogs are happy, and the team across all four branches are doing an incredible job every single day. Thank you for trusting us with your dogs. Now go and enjoy the sunshine. ๐ŸŒธ
